Next, select the Field Location Tab. This will allow the user to define the field attributes (farm name, field name, acres, and field boundary). The acres for the field are auto populated based on the mapping of field boundary.
- User will have the option of using drawing tools to define the field boundary within Bing maps. Once the boundary is defined the acres and soil information will auto populate for that field.
- Next, the user will define the farm name and field name.
- The user will already view the map zoomed into the general area of interest based on the zip code used to set up the grower account. The user may also simply scroll and pan to determine the area of interest.
- After locating the area of interest, the user can either Upload an existing shapefile or use the Drawing Tools to define the boundary location. The user has the option of hand drawing the boundary, defining a pivot area, or using the CLU (Common Land Unit) data layers for a predefined boundary selection.
- There is a help icon (?) next to the Drawing Tools text to provide instructions on the Drawing Mode, Pivot Mode, and CLU Mode.
- To import an existing boundary, there’s an option to import a shapefile of field boundaries next to the Upload The three files required to import a shapefile are a .shp, .shx and .dbf file. Hold down Ctrl on your keyboard and then left click on all three required files prior to clicking Open.
- When selecting the option to draw, use the hand icon within the map to draw around the perimeter of the field. Each click will establish a boundary point for the field. Once finished, select the Checkmark option in the Drawing Tools bar in the upper-left hand corner.
Drawing Multiple Field Boundaries
The user can choose to remain within the field creation page and continue drawing multiple fields for a grower’s account. This can reduce time and effort within other sections of the work order generation.
- User defines a field boundary within the Bing maps.
- If the user decides to create multiple field boundaries for a grower’s account, then the user can select the “Save and Add Another” button in the action bar. This will save the previously drawn field boundary and clear the map for the user to add another field boundary.
Soil Information
Once a field boundary is established, the soil zone(s) within the boundary will appear.
- Soil Information legend will display the various soil zone(s) within the field in order from most dominant to least dominant.
- User can select a soil zone within the Soil Information legend to highlight that selected soil zone within the field boundary.
- Soil information is auto-populated from the USDA Web Soil Survey. There is an option in the soil information legend to ‘Update Soil Data’ in order to refresh the data view.
- Once field boundaries are completed, user then has the option to navigate to either “Solution Guide” or “Field Properties” to continue entering field history data.
Field Properties
User now has the option to choose a year to input field properties.
- All data points within the field properties page are optional to capture. This page will serve as a
reference point for the conditions of the current field to assist in recommending the appropriate
seed(s) for that field and may also be referenced in other features of the site, for example to
support in-field service forms in the Dashboard feature.
